Whole Health Dentistry now offers Pinhole Surgical Technique, a state-of-the-art procedure to treat gum recession.
What causes gum recession?
Gum recession may occur due to hormonal changes, age, incorrect brushing, or gum disease. For some sufferers, gum recession occurs due to a life-long systemic disease such as diabetes or medications that treat certain health conditions. Gum recession not only affects your looks but also is bad for your oral health.
Why should I be worried about gum recession?
Gum recession not only affects the appearance of your smile but also causes tooth sensitivity and makes you more susceptible to developing tooth decay. Enamel, the outermost layer of our teeth, protects teeth from sensitivity and decay below the gum line. Underneath the layer of enamel is a layer known as the dentin, which when exposed, is likely to cause tooth sensitivity or pain. This is why gum recession causes teeth to be sensitive. If left untreated, gum recession usually worsens, and so do the effects that it has on your oral health.
What is the difference between traditional gum grafting and the new Pinhole technique?
Traditional gum grafting, although effective, requires the use of a scalpel and sutures. The surgery itself is quite invasive, leaving the patient to deal with a lengthy recovery that is often painful and uncomfortable. With the Pinhole Surgical Technique, you can have your procedure completed in as little as an hour, and then be on your way to your normal routine! You will see the cosmetic results almost immediately following your procedure. Plus, you will experience little to no discomfort or bleeding.
What to expect
To begin, the area being treated is cleaned and numbed. The dentist uses a special instrument to make tiny entry points in the gum and then guides the gum tissue into place. Collagen fibers are placed under the gum to facilitate the healing process, which is painless! You can even return to work right after your appointment.
